The intake of Salmon Oil versus Fish Oil supplements:

“ For 1 portion (200 g) per week of fish containing the maximum admissible limit for PCDD/PCDFs (4 pgTEQ/g fish), the total intake would be 200 x 4 = 800 pg TEQ, which is very close to the recommended weekly intake of PCDD/PCDFs of 14 pg TEQ/Kg body weight (~14 x 70 kg = 980 pg TEQ).

Contrarily, using 1 capsule fish oil supplement/day containing the maximum admissible lipid (2 pg TEQ/g oil), the weekly intake would be 7 x 1 x 2 pg TEQ = 14 pg TEQ, which is substantially lower (~70 times) than the recommended weekly intake.

In this way we demonstrate that even if the fish oil supplements contain a PCDD/PCDF content which slightly exceeds, the dioxin intake is minimal using these supplements compared with the intake via consumption of fresh fish (from contaminated locations).”
